I'm not big into television or movies, but I did read "The Carpathian Castle" by Jules Verne this year. Written in 1893, it is one of the first "Horror" novels ever written. Verne is known as the father of science fiction, but also was an early forerunner of fantasy, horror, and romance (yes, its true - See Verne's "The Green Ray"). The Carpathian Castle is filled with mystery and superstition (instead of violence and gore) it was enjoyable to read where the "horror" genre got its start...yet, to be honest, it is somewhat disturbing to me to see where it is now in our day and age.
House of Leaves by Danielewski is unlike anything you've ever read before and contains the scariest scene I've read.
how could I forget the Blair Witch Project 🫣 thanks for reminding me CarolK! Come to think of it, seeing The Exorcist (not when it came originally out ) was pretty scary too!
https://community.qualtrics.com/XMcommunity/discussion/comment/50340#Comment_50340I totally agree. Nothing says scary like the best take on the 'Scary Parody' than this classic. I watch it at least 3 times every year in the fall. No matter how many times I watch it, there is always another gem that I catch. I'm sure I take a secret pleasure in laughing at the absurdity of "collective idiots" that are found in every one of Mel Brooks' movies.
https://community.qualtrics.com/XMcommunity/discussion/comment/50586#Comment_50586So true. It was unwanted by many, but like you said felt fitting. So many other opportunities left open though!
I am not into scary movies at all. In fact, I'm not into anything spooky. Black Bird on Apple TV was enough scary and suspense for me these days.
Why is it that truth is so much stranger, and in this case, unnerving, than fiction? I loved that show, but had to watch something upbeat between episodes for balance.
Freddy Krueger was enough for me to stop watching scary movies for a LONG time until about 3 years ago when I started watching almost nothing else. I think I've seen almost all of them now, even the old ones that make you laugh because of the graphics and horrible acting. I've since reverted back to the psychological thrillers and sci-fi genre I've always gravitated to. For now...
The Sea Beast terrified me, especially Blue!
ColbyA They could totally do a spin-off about the son
https://community.qualtrics.com/XMcommunity/discussion/comment/50499#Comment_50499The Sixth Sense is a classic! And Toni Collette was so good in that. That's a movie I can watch again and again!
https://community.qualtrics.com/XMcommunity/discussion/comment/50490#Comment_50490I remember the craziness around Blair Witch Project! It's kind of amazing how the mythos of that movie went viral before the days of social media. Everyone was talking about it!
https://community.qualtrics.com/XMcommunity/discussion/comment/50485#Comment_50485I'm the same, BruceK -- not super into scary stuff, unless it's somehow "smart" scary, or makes you think
We have little kids, so watching horror movies in 2022 is not much of an option....but we did re-watch Psycho the other night, can't beat Hitchcock...
Hey everyone!
If you haven't already watched do give this one a try. Prison Break!! I saw it late I guess...
Definitely a show that kept me hooked up through all its seasons and gave me chills at some point. Its fascinating how smart a human mind can be and how obvious are the flaws in front of us, which only a right observer sees. With my all time fav actor Wentworth Miller (Michael Scofield) and a stunning performance from everyone. Must watch as some of it is taken from real life Scenarios.
Hope you all like it! Just 5 seasons ....
Well, I'm reading right now Robert W. Chambers' The King in Yellow. For a Lovecraft fan like me — and his horror Universe —, a must-read!
Too late to be original in this thread...
The most recently scary show I saw is Stranger Things.
I'm not a fan of horror movies but I felt in love with the ambiance of this series. The mix beetween 80's and paranormal is awesome !
I also notice that my favorite book series ever has already been mentionned :
The Dark Tower by Stephen King...
I have read it almost 5 or 6 times but I still dont know the end
A few pages before the end of the last book, there is an advertising by the author witch says we can stop our reading here !
His point that the journey is more important than the goal reach me inside and I'm still answering myself if I will or not read the epilogue the next time I fall into this epic story...
Did you read the end, JessicaGregory_CHNw ?
Big chicken here, so no horror movies!
We went to Disney's Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which is more my speed.
I watched a movie called - "Choose or Die". Nothing flashy or conventional about this film; it's just good ol' fashioned physiological terror that keeps you wondering what's going to happen next. I think the movie is a great new direction for the horror genre.
So many great books, tv shows, and movies mentioned so far! Here are a few of my favorites to add to the mix
Haunted and Midnight Mass on Netflix
HellHouse LLC on Amazon Prime
