Formatting buttons in Profile-type matrix table

Hello community,
In my survey I have Profile-type matrix table question. I cannot get it to look right.
If I choose the "Flat" layout, under Look and Feel, the buttons are two wide and don't all fit on one screen:

If I choose the "Classic" layout, the button are the right width and all fit one the screen. But the text is too light (faint) and the text on the buttons is not centered:

Overall I prefer the "Flat" layout (the text in questions and instructions is much too large in "Classic" and choosing a smaller text size in Look & Feel does not seem to change that), but I would like the button in the Profile-type matrix table question to be resized so that they appear like in the "Classic" layout. Is this something that requires CSS? Is there another way to achieve this?
If CSS is required, could someone please suggest how to do that?
