How do I set an "automatic" error for choosing more than X multiselect answers?

Trying to set up an error message that is immediate or automatic for validation on a multi-select answer question.
I have set a validation for the question so that the customer can only select two answers (out of 40!) But as it is currently, they can technically select as many answers as they'd like and only see the error message once they click 'next'.

Hi elizapowers
This should be possible using javascript by hiding the other choices once they select their 2 answer choices, you can also show the other choices if they wish to change their responses if they uncheck the previously selected choices.
