the matrix type is 'text entry', and the matrix table has a significant amount of custom code (jquery) located in the Look and feel -> general -> header section.
the matrix contains other questions; horizontal stars (ratings) , and a checkbox, so it would be easier to update the matrix with a text area (text essay) instead of creating a new matrix table with text areas, but then add those other customizations.
