I am doing an experiment that requires participants to select two items from a list of 40 and place them in a group, but they need to be able to simultaneously see all of the different choices. As well, the present format doesn't allow participants to take it on their phone because the list is to long.
Therefore, I am trying to move the list of items below the group. Trying to make it look like this:
I want to move it below the group and make it four columns rather than just one. I know I need to reorder the td in the table in the html possibly through a jquery. But I am totally new in javascript. Any help would be so great.

Pick group and rank questions have always been difficult with large number of choices. Hence, just a thought here.
Why don't you show all these options in a multiple choice question>column format and ask them to pick top 10 carry forward those choices in pick group rank question and ask them to rank it. Even better just include rank order question and no need to pick and group as well. Since you have just have one group.
The approach you mentioned would be quite cumbersome as on mobile screen the 40 choices will be a pain to show and drag and drop is another task altogether.
Hope it helps!
