Tracking use of hover or pop-up text

I am developing a survey that has respondents rank a list of terms. They can currently hover over the terms in the answer choices to see a definition of the term. (I used these instructions: https://osvaldas.info/elegant-css-and-jquery-tooltip-responsive-mobile-friendly) I need to be able to track which respondents access the definitions while taking the survey. I think it would be easier to have them click on the text for a definition (instead of hovering) and track whether they clicked on the text but I'm not sure how to do this.
