Hi Qualtrics community!
The Qualtrics api Understanding Your Data Set (qualtrics.com) states that
"For all other respondents, the location is an approximation determined by comparing the participant’s IP address to a location database. Inside the United States, this data is typically accurate to the city level. Outside the United States, this data is typically only accurate to the country level."
How does this impact LocationLatitude and LocationLongitude? Does this mean that all coordinates within a city will be the same? For example, will all users in New York City default to the same coordinates?

No, lat. and long. won't necessarily be the same in the same city. There are other factors such as who the IP is registered to (e.g., the ISP). The quoted statement is only explaining the IP location accuracy you might expect.


Thank you TomG for responding! For a little more context, we were trying to filter repeat respondents for our survey with the same coordinates. Is this a viable strategy, or do we risk filtering out users on shared IPs, such as in universities and public wifi?


It is not a viable strategy. It would be as bad as or worse than filtering by IP address.


coming back to this old thread because I have the same issue - I have 100+ respondent with the same lat. and long. wouldn’t that be a sign that they are the same people filling out the survey multiple time ? 


I have the same thoughts and questions here. If we are looking at a survey with 30+ with the same lat/long would that be evidence of duplications? Seems like @TomG is the expert on this. Any thoughts?
