Adjusting width of matrix tables

Hey!
I have a survey I made where each question is in matrix-table form, with 21 scale points per statement. Because the scales are relatively large, survey responders have to scroll left and right in order to see the entire range of options. I tried adjusting the width of the statement column by clicking and dragging the separating line, but I don't have control over how far it goes. Even if I drag it a small distance, it instantly gets far too narrow making it so the text is compressed to one word per line. How can I adjust the width of my matrix tables without making the text so compressed? Thanks!
NB I thought about toggling the "position text above" option but for now, that's not a workable solution because the text gets between the scale points and their labels/
