But I don’t think display logic is the solution because it applies to the entire question, rather to parts of it. And I need different ‘force response’ logic for two of the columns within one side-by-side question.

Here’s an example of how you can use custom validation in a side-by-side question. In this scenario, an entry must be made in the Change Description column when “Yes” is selected in the first column. But if No is selected, the description column must be left blank.

the problem is that my second column is not a text box but a scale where they do have to choose an answer (if they selected ‘yes’ in the first one; if ‘not’ - they don’t need to).

Sure, in the second step of each condition, you should just be able to change “Is Not Empty” to “Is Selected”. 

Then you probably want to delete the fourth step (“Is Empty”) because respondents won’t be able to deselect a choice in the second column. Otherwise, if you required that the second column not be selected, it would prevent those who pick No in the first one and make a selection in the second one by mistake from moving ahead in the survey.

Ok!!! Thanks so much @MatthewM !! So then I should create ‘ANDs’ for THE 5-scale points (as I don’t care which one they select, as long as they select one of them)? 

And ifI have 10 items/lines, I need to copy the logic for all of them, correct? 

Yes, so in your survey, each of the 10 lines would have 3 conditions. The “Yes” condition would be linked with AND to the second column. Instead of setting up a condition for each point on the scale you could use the Recode value instead; that is, where Recode value is greater than 0.
