Steps for Importing Historical Data? | XM Community
Skip to main content
I am in the process of importing several sets of historical data from multiple surveys into the Qualtrics platform and wanted to check with the Community on whether or not anyone has compiled a set of steps or best practices for this process?

I understand it will require creating a shell survey, preparing the file for import, and importing the data. After reviewing the support pages there appear to be several options for importing and I'm curious what the community has found to work best.

Thanks in advance for your help
Unless you want to continue using the survey project in future, I find it MUCH easier to simply import everything as embedded data and not worry about structuring/building the survey project. You can still do all the reporting you need to and combine with other projects in dashboards.

Ideally I add the embedded data names in the same order that they appear in my historic data file(s), create a single test record by hitting "preview survey" (this is just to build the data structure), delete the record that was created, then click "Export & Import > Export Data...". Lastly I simply copy and paste my historic data into this project-friendly format file and import everything.

While this seems like a lot of unnecessary steps, it isn't because with the project-friendly format you don't have to manually map each data variable.
This is an interesting approach that might be feasible. Thanks for the quick response akdashboard.

I will need to consider whether or not we need to continue using the same survey project in the future. Because it's possible, I would still welcome any other thoughts to this thread when creating the shell survey is necessary.

Thanks again!
