Hi everyone,
We are running a series of surveys on the COVID-mitigation measures, using Qualtrics. It seems that some participants are having issues in mobile view, however.
Simply put: in mobile view, the text and response options are too wide to fit the screen, and participants need to scroll to read them. This concerns both MC questions, matrix questions, and text/graphics. All works fine on a desktop screen, but on mobiles, the text overruns outside of the screen. I was under the impression that Qualtrics would auto-fit them to the screen size, but this does not seem to be the case. It seems that Qualtrics somehow registers or assumes the screen to be bigger than it actually is. Could it be that mobiles have some sort of browser zoom that causes this?
Ideally, the text would always fit the screen, and sections or questions that are too long would simply go on different lines. Is there any way to force this? I have searched the community and support pages but can't find a solution (although I presume it is a simple issue).
I would really appreciate your input on this. Thanks in advance for your trouble!
Hi @CPRF,
I know that certain types of questions, like Side-by-Side, aren't mobile-compatible, but in your case the first thing I would check is whether or not the Mobile Friendly option is selected in each question.
Another thing to check is that you're using a Dynamic Theme; go to the Look & Feel tab.
Dear Matthew,
Thanks very much for your response! Yes, Mobile Friendly is on everywhere. We have a custom theme from our institution (which normally works fine).
I think the issue has something to do with carryover from an older survey. I think my colleague started out from an existing survey, and that there's something embedded in the code that I can't identify. My wife advised to rebuild the survey from scratch by copying all blocks to the library and adding them manually to a new survey, and this seems to have fully resolved it (works fine in mobile view now). I would still like to track down what the problem was, though.
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it!
Sounds like you have an expert in your household! You're probably on the right track for the root of the problem; I've had surveys built in a static theme in the old Look & Feel menu that have exhibited similar issues to yours when I've used copies of them for newer surveys.
Hi there! I came across the same problem today, and accidentally found other way to deal with this issue - without rebuilding the whole survey.
So what you can do is to:
1) copy the wording of the question,
2) paste it somewhere else where you can remove all formatting (e.g. command line in the browser),
3) copy it afterwards and paste back to the question field.
Simply using "Remove formatting" in Qualtrics won't do the job.
Good luck!
P.S. this was suggested to me by my partner, so apparently our household experts are super effective in solving problems with Qualtrics surveys :)
