Thanks Yash. After my original post I thought about it and I actually did end up going the Survey Flow route. It actually ended up working well with the "initializing" of the Embedded Data fields angle. Thanks for the response!
I've been thinking about this some more and I think the way I'll probably handle it is to simply create any embedded data fields that a user might *not* see at the start of the survey and set them to "No". Then, if they don't see the question it still gets the "No" value in their directory entry but if they do see the question and answer it, it gets the accurate ("yes") info.
I think I'm just going to have the people put that second line into the first address text entry (which is force response). It's just too clunky a workaround. But I guess I'm still looking for a way to deal with my second part. I can set a 2 answer matrix question to have "default choice" of "No" but if the person filling out the survey doesn't see that question then, even though there is a contact list trigger to inject the answer to that question into an embedded data field in their Contact List entry, the "No" doesn't overwrite the "yes" they could have put in last time they took the registration survey. Can this perhaps be done with Javascript? Perhaps something along the lines of "If this person did NOT see question 20 then set embedded data field to NO"?

But the issue is that "selected choices" is not an option for text entry fields. The only two options are "question text" and "Address (Line 2):" with that second one being the answer they type in the text box. I have the second one selected.
Thanks for the idea Kate that sounds workable. Yeah it will be a pain to update the current ten thousand entries :( but it would basically be automated going forward using your method. I guess this is where I should wonder if they're going to stop supporting Regex in forms? I suppose for the old entries I can just export the Directory, filter the contacts in Excel based on the Zip codes that are within 50 miles and then assign those filtered contacts a "yes" or "true" or "1" in the new embedded data field. The other good thing about doing it your way is that I don't have to ask the participant "Do you live within 50 miles?" since they aren't always sure or give truthful answers.
Hmm... I'm wondering if any of what I typed matters at all because of how automatic deduplication works for iQ Direcotry (which I guess is what Target Audience is now called?). Thanks for the response Tom. I think I need to expand my question a bit. I guess I should have also stated that we're Target Audience users (if that makes a difference). I am thinking about things more on the Directory level than the Mailing List/Panel level. Here's my understanding of things--maybe you can see if I'm off on some of these things? Let's say these first questions just deal with new users who go to a registration URL on our website to "Open Access" registration surveys. * The Directory contains *everyone* that you are registering and storing embedded data on correct? So if I had two registration surveys, and one dumped all the embedded data via contact list trigger into a contact list "registration1" and the second survey (different URL) dumped everything into a contact list "registration2" while people in mailing list "registration1" would *not* be in mailing list "registration2" (and vice versa), they would *both* be in "The Directory" correct? * If that is true, let's
Thanks for the suggestions but for me I think the issue is not tagging these people or locking them out at signup--because I don't want to stop people from signing up and I don't need to capture this only going forward but I need to be able to search the 25,000 people I already have in my Directory. So I actually figured out a way to do this in one Regex Match string and just saved that as a "Saved Filter". It's a little involved but it did work! And I got exactly the number of filtered contacts I should have (I confirmed it by exporting the entire directory into Excel and checking there). So here's how I did it. To create a reusable filter based on zipcode radius using Regex Matching: 1. Get your list of Zipcodes. I did this using searchbug.com and freemaptools.com. They both gave the same results so I ended up with 667 zipcodes. 2. Paste these into column B in an Excel spreadsheet. One zipcode per row. 3. Now use Find and Replace to replace every numerical digit with a square brack
