If you’re testing this in Preview mode, there is an issue where setting the value of an input returns an uncaught error “cannot set property of null” because the element in the frame does not exist for some reason until you interact with the element.To put it another way here is something I’ve been dealing with:I have a text input that I’m targeting just like you with a query selector. Only difference is that I’m using vanilla javascript:document.querySelector("input[aria-labelledby='question-display-QID2']").value = "Coolio";In Preview mode, I can 100% see the element in the DOM. Thank you @Sachin Nandikol ! I did not realize you could do branching off of device type. This completely works for what I’m trying to do.That begs the question: if Device Type is a branchable object, shouldn’t there be some kind of ${...} reference to it hiding somewhere under the hood?
@Pete_L Hi Pete! I know this is from quite some time ago but could you please provide the code you used in step 3? Sure thing!It changes depending on the question usually, but Qualtrics is pretty consistent in the structure of their IDs. Here’s the general code that you add to the Look & Feel > Style > Custom CSS box..QID113-3-label {display: none;}To find the values for QID##-#-label, you preview your survey and push F12 in Chrome or Firefox, then use the “Select Element” tool in the top left of the dev tools (looks like an arrow pointing into a box) and then click on the option you want to hide.You’ll see the dev tools highlight a line of code and in the code you’ll see something like:id=”QID113-3-label”

icegoffy sorry for the slow reply! We are hosting the files externally outside of Qualtrics.We have never been able to get it to work using the Qualtrics library.
For those who are interested I ran the following test last night:Created a survey set up just like the one in the help file for authenticators, in other words...Added embedded data fields RecipientEmail and ExternalDataReference to the beginning of the Survey FlowAdded Authenticator after the embedded data. Set it to Prefill based off ExternalDataReferenceAssociated authenticator with a contact list of four contacts (2 with emails, 2 without)Sent an email distribution to the entire contact listCase 1: Entered the survey via the email for one case - no issues.Case 2: Entered the survey via email for one case, broke off in the middle, resumed via direct anonymous link (not passing EDR). Resumed at correct point and I finished up the survey.Case 3: Entered survey via direct anonymous link (not passing EDR). Completed survey.Case 4: Entered survey via passing data through the anonymous link (aka ?ExternalDataReference=***).Case 1 no issues. Email distribution shows case started and complet
@ebony_haley618 Sorry for double post - saw you replied as I was typing my above reply. For using information across loops, use the Loop & Merge fields to pipe in values. You can store sex/gender/or any response value in the columns in Loop & Merge. Definitely check out the help files on that because it helped us a lot! For example I have my merge field 2 say first, second, third, fourth, etc. to say "Your first child..." and "Your second child..." and so on. 😀 You could store in one of those fields the text-fill from the previous loop, as long as you pipe in the right loop number.
@ebony_haley618 The Sex/Gender question has to be a radio button or drop-down for this to work properly, otherwise you'll never be able to predict what the respondent typed into the box. If someone types in "b oy" or " boy" or "gurl" then that would break everything. You'll need that sex/gender question to be categorical and don't let people pick something off the list. By the way - my code above assumes there are 3 options with 1=male, 2=female 3=other/refusal. If you have more than 3 just keep adding more "if" statements for each value.
Hi @ebony_haley618 Sorry for the delay. I am assuming you have a question at the beginning of your loop that says something like "What sex was your child assigned at birth?" That's the setup we used. I'll try to walk you through as best I can and also copy + paste the code I created here. 1. Create the question in the loop [Q1] "What sex was your child assigned at birth?" with however many options you want. I'm using Male, Female, and Prefer not to answer since it's rare for a hospital to allow other specifications, although you could have an "Other" which is possible. 2. Create another question beneath [Q1] and set it to Question Type = Text. I'll call this one [Q1_FILL]. It's important that [Q1] and [Q1_FILL] are on the same page. Do not put a page break between them! 3. Write down the QID for the text fill, [Q1_FILL]. 4. Add this JavaScript to [Q1] which will set the value of [Q1_FILL] when someone clicks the Next/back buttons: ` Qualtrics.SurveyEngine.addOnPageSubmit(function()
@ebony_haley618 Sounds like what we had to deal with. I'll be able to get you something tomorrow if you're able to wait? It's going to work the same way I described it but just appending the loop number to the end of the variable name. It's hard to describe over comments 😀
Hi @ebony_haley618 - The concept I have up above should still work for you. It sounds like you have a form with some information (like sex), and then on the next screen(s) you want to display he/she. Any looping or anything like that to worry about?

@fleb - You can go to the Look & Feel > Header > Source View and paste that html code there and it will work correctly 😀 That's how I'm currently handling it for my projects. I have not contacted Qualtrics support but will go ahead and put in a feature request for this now that the new "Idea" thread exists!
If that's the case then that's wonderful news - I will look for the older threads. How are you confirming it's being set on those actions? Are you piping the results of all of them on the same screen where they all take place?
You should be able to do this using a Side-By-Side question. Set the columns as "Open ended response" and it will let them type in answers.
I want to be sure I understand what's happening. Q1 - Respondent picks wrong answer and clicks submit/next Q1_WARNING - Displays if respondent clicked wrong answer at Q1. Click next to go to Q2 Q2 - Respondent picks wrong answer and clicks submit/next Q2_WARNING - Displays if respondent clicked wrong answer at Q2. Click next to go to Q3 Etc... Is this correct? If respondents are not able to back up, then you could do onPageSubmit to increment the embedded data on the warning page itself. Something like this on the warning pages: Qualtrics.SurveyEngine.addOnPageSubmit(function() { var warns = "${e://Field/warns}"; var plusone = warns+1; Qualtrics.SurveyEngine.setEmbeddedData("warns", plusone); }); This will increment your embedded data by +1 whenever they click NEXT on those warning screens. Just updating the thread that this is still an issue. All CSS files are being hosted externally, outside of Qualtrics for my projects.
In my experience you can only set embedded data on page submission, not onready or onload. That's why the embedded data is blank until they click back/next. Try setting the embedded data before they arrive to the page (onSubmit on the previous page). That should fix your problem.
My initial gut reaction is to store it in json format or an array in the embedded data field, but it might be super hard to read just by human eyes (if that's how you're planning on using it). If it's something you need to use from within the survey, you could use javascript to parse out the json/array. Not sure if that helps! How are you planning on using the field once it is in Qualtrics?
You can only set embedded data onPageSubmit sadly. This is not documented very well but I learned about it through others here on the forum.
You could add embedded data fields to each contact to track when they've completed a survey. I'm picturing you add a Trigger to update their embedded data to something like "1" for complete. Then do a daily extract of the contact list looking for people who don't have a 1 in that field/variable. You could preload them as 0. It's a manual process but it at least lets you know who needs to be emailed. You could preload their stakeholder in there too in order to quickly perform mail merge in another system.
I'd suggest using JavaScript. Here's what I'm picturing: 1 - Create an embedded data field in your survey flow and set it default to 1. 2 -On the screen the text displays on, add something like a span to put the display text into: `<span id="descText"> </span>` 3 -onReady you do something like this: `var loopnum = "${e://Field/loopnum}";//Embedded data loop counter` `if(loopnum<2) { //If this is the first loop then...` ` document.getElementById('descText').innerHTML = "";` `} else { //Otherwise this is not the first loop so we display the text...` ` document.getElementById('descText').innerHTML = "You are going to answer these sets of questions another time...";` `}` 4 - onPageSubmit at the end of the loop you will want to do something like this to increment the counter: `Qualtrics.SurveyEngine.addOnPageSubmit(function() ` `{` ` var loopnum = "${e://Field/loopnum}";` ` loopnum = loopnum+1;` ` Qualtrics.SurveyEngine.setEmbeddedData("loopnum", loopnum
We came up with an easy to way to implement it that works within loops and stores the calculated textfill in the code (for review). Put a text question underneath the main question. Hide it onLoad. Have javascript set the value of that hidden text question onPageSubmit. Can't grab the code right now but that's the basic concept. Q1 FILL_Q2 (hidden question) If Q1=1, set FILL_Q2 to "this" else "that" Q2 pipes "FILL_Q2" in the question text.
Here's an idea - does anyone know if you can use getSelectedChoices to function on a row of a side-by-side? I could compare the .length of that return value and if it's greater than >1, assume more than one option has been selected and set the embedded data appropriately.
