What’s the best way to structure metadata so the EX dashboard hierarchy updates automatically?

The best way to ensure your Employee Experience (EX) dashboard hierarchy updates smoothly and minimizes manual effort is to keep the names of your metadata fields consistent.

Metadata Management Best Practices

  • Consistency is Key: Consistently named metadata fields reduce the need to manually remap new or updated metadata in your dashboards.

  • New Fields Require Mapping: Any new metadata fields you introduce will still require manual mapping into your dashboard(s) to reflect their data.

  • Handling Restructuring: When organizational restructuring happens, the best practice is to create new metadata fields with the desired names and import the values into these new fields.

    • Do Not Rename Existing Fields: Renaming is not directly supported.

    • Avoid Duplication: Using unique identifiers in your import will append the new fields to existing contacts, avoiding duplication.

Propagating Changes and Hierarchy Updates

  • Reflecting Updates Broadly: For project metadata updates to be reflected across historical projects and dashboards, you may need to manually run "Update All Responses with Current Metadata" for both recent and historical projects. This is necessary to propagate the metadata changes across the data.

  • Hierarchy Recalculation: Manual changes to participant metadata do not immediately affect hierarchy structures. Hierarchy updates require:

    • Manual adjustments (e.g., drag and drop).

    • A participant import that includes all hierarchy fields, which triggers a hierarchy recalculation.

I’ve always had trouble getting the participant metadata to update the org hierarchy metadata. 

When I contacted support, they said it could only be updated by importing a csv file.
