How to track who evaluated whom in Qualtrics when using parent-child hierarchy

In Qualtrics XM, when using a parent-child hierarchy tied to a participant list (not a Directory), the hierarchy search question allows respondents to look up and select a person to evaluate, but Qualtrics does not natively store that selected hierarchy unit in response data. As a result, the challenge is figuring out how to reliably capture the selected person (and their organizational context) as embedded data so that, in Data & Analysis, you can see both who submitted the assessment and who the assessment is about. I am wondering if there is a work around to this issue? I’ve tried various JavaScript within the dropdown question holding the hierarchy data but nothing has worked.

Unfortunately, as you’ve found, JavaScript cannot access the Org Hierarchy question’s selected value directly because it is a special question type and its data is not exposed in the DOM in a standard way. Qualtrics does not support custom scripting for this question type.

As an alternative After the Org Hierarchy question, add a standard follow-up question (e.g., a dropdown or text entry) asking the respondent to confirm or re-select the person/unit they chose. You can then pipe this value into embedded data. While not seamless, this ensures the data is captured.

Thank you for this workaround, Peeyush! I’ve tried to configure it within the survey, adding a new question right after the org-hierarchy question ( the question is “Please type the name of the employee you wish will be providing feedback for” *insert dropdown menu tied to the hierarchy*). However, when I tried to add a Piped Text to the following (new) question to bring in the chosen name, the hierarchy question is not even an option to choose from on the list. Is there another way to go about it?
