Discussion about XM Directory (XMD) and XMD Lite in a University Setting

Hi Everyone,
I would love to hear your thoughts on this. We recently considered the purchase of XMD for our University but decided against it for a few reasons.

  • All people who have ever received a survey would get added to the XM Directory List (even if they are not within your brand). Our office alone sends surveys to about 500,000 external participant's annually and it seemed too cumbersome to manually remove these people from XMD

  • We could not figure out a good way of handling anonymous and confidentially collected data since it would all get thrown in together into a directory. Although you can have separate directories for confidential data, data would have to be manually moved over to that directory. If users were placed in that directory then their non-confidential surveys would also go there.

  • Setting permissions at the user and survey level is not an option currently (or it wasn't when we looked into the tool)

  • We would no longer be able to import contacts into an existing contact list to update attributes of each contact.

  • No real system in place for managing Embedded Data fields that are added to the directory.

We initially were drawn to XMD because we liked the idea of seeing data along the various touchpoints in a student's journey, but overall we felt like XMD was better suited for a business than a University. Given the limitations above, have any other Universities successfully implemented XMD?

Finally a post about XMD in a university setting! +1 to all the above. We are considering implementing it as well but have similar concerns. Additionally, we have all students and faculty on our brand, and I am not sure if XMD Lite would be suitable for their educational + research needs. Would be very interested to hear if other universities have had success with this.

Hi Tom_1842 ,
Thanks for the reply! We also have all students, faculty, and staff on our brand. I was told we are all going to be forced into XMD Lite at some point, so hopefully we can sort out these concerns prior to that.

uhrxx005 Glad to hear you are in a similar situation as us! When you say we are all going to be forced into XMD Lite at some point, do you mean just for your university (that you went ahead with XMD) or that Qualtrics is heading that way in general? Thank you for sharing!

Tom_1842 . Qualtrics is heading that way in General. Eventually XMD Lite is going to replace the current contacts for everyone. At least that is my understanding of it.

uhrxx005 Oh that is interesting. There is really not a lot of information out there about XMD Lite that I could find. I did see at the bottom of the below support page a mention about "You may have a Lists tab, and nothing else. That means you have access to a new Contacts experience, made to look and function more like the Lists tab in XM Directory."
"New Contacts Experience" does make it sound like they are headed that way.
Will be interesting to see how it goes! Thanks again.
