The Great Resignation is upon us, and K-20 has been hit hard. Colleagues I speak with across the country are struggling to retain talented teachers, faculty, and staff as more that 44% of employees in the US plan to look for a job this year. The effects of COVID have sunk their teeth in, and the ed-tech world is seeking faculty/teacher/staff talent to drive forward their company initiatives. Now with the Omnicron variant, as educators we need to take inventory as to what the future of education looks like, and the evolution of employee based needs in today’s environment. 
The rudimentary question is “Why?” As you chat with your teachers, faculty and staff, why are they leaving? Is it money, benefits, or lack of satisfaction/work life balance? Secondly, from your experience how do we stop it from happening, and what levers can we pull to connect our mission driven organizations to their personal missions?

We've witnessed The Great Resignation on our campus across divisions. We saw few departures during the first year of COVID; but upon our mandated return to campus in April 2021, we began losing employees and continue to see resignations. Their excuses for leaving vary (e.g., moving to a job with better pay or with WFH benefits). We have even had a handful of valuable employees resign without any other job prospects. The only common factor thus far is their desire for a more comfortable work atmosphere and a better work/life balance. One preventative measure I've been researching lately is the concept of Stay Interviews. Talk to your employees. Find out what they like and what they dislike. What motivates them to come to work? What's the worst part of their job? What is their career goal for 5/10 years?
