Is there a way, maybe with an API or something, where I could go in and mass close tickets? My org has thousands of tickets that are active from surveys that took place years ago - nobody is actually going to go and close really old tickets.

There may be a way, but I’m not sure how easily it would be to implement. Through Qualtrics’ API, you can Update a Ticket, but it is a single ticket call. You could Search Tickets using a Created or Updated at parameter to return old tickets that need to be updated and possible write a script to then update each ticket’s status to close.
