I need custom validation code to force a response for some of the likert options but not all of them. The final options within the question are "Other" free text box opportunities for participants to volunteer additional information.

 

We want to force a response for the specific listed likert scale options but NOT for the "Other" free text box options.

 

I have included an example of a question and the custom validation I have created (for all 7 options) in Q18 before the "Other" options begin (based on previous linked post).

 

When I preview the survey I am still being told I need to complete the “other” lines.

 

Where am I going wrong?

 

 

Assuming that the three “Other” lines are not included in the Custom Validation, make sure that you do not have “Force Response” enabled for this question. That’s the only reason I can think of to cause this to happen, unless there is something askew in the the part of the Custom Validation that is not shown.

My advice is to not use open ends in Matrix questions. Besides being difficult to validate it is confusing for respondents. In addition to your current validation issue, you haven’t addressed the situations where someone enters other text text but doesn’t select a rating, or they select an other rating but don’t enter text.

There is always a better way to ask for the information you need.
