Inline Question Displays Unpublished Changes | XM Community
Skip to main content

We are testing changes to a live survey program that impact the inline survey question text, answer choices, and translations. We have not published the changes to the survey and did not plan to publish them to production until testing was complete.

We now see that the unpublished changes have actually been displaying within the inline question in the email sent to live/production recipients. The piped text for the inline question text and answer choices display the unpublished labels that we do not want displayed until the changes have completed the testing phase. This includes changes to survey translations as well that were not published. When the inline question answer choice is clicked, the survey opens and correctly displays the published version of the survey.

See the documentation for inline questions here, where I do not see it documented that inline questions display unpublished survey changes: Email Survey Invitations

Is this expected behavior? If so, how are we expected to test changes to a live survey that has an inline question?

I would go to the tools and revert the survey back to a a previous version and see if that fixes the problem. To test though you could put in in a block and use display logic to not show that block to actual “real” respondents” and allow you to test while the survey is live without causing it to be seen by everyone, then once tested move it out of the hidden block into the regular survey flow.

Hi Kylie,

Thanks for the response! Reverting to the old version may be required here as a quick fix / stop-gap, but if there have been other changes to the survey since the unpublished changes to the inline question have been made it may get messy unfortunately.

For hiding testing survey question, we don’t want to have the updated question as a separate question, but instead update the existing question (for data field consistency). I imagine the most fool-proof way is to make the changes in a test copy version of the survey, and apply the exact same changes then in the production survey. But I just don’t think this should be expected behavior and instead Qualtrics should update the product to distribute the inline question with the published version of the question.

I’ve had that problem in the past as well. I ended up hard-coding the text and labels in the email source html instead of using piped-in text.

Update: After filing a ticketing and pushing engineering on this issue, Qualtrics has just pushed an update to production so that inline question piped text will now reflect the published version of the survey question and not the latest draft version.
