I have auto advance set for my questions so the participant has five seconds to answer (one word). However I want them to be able to finish typing if they have started typing within the 5 sec, but with auto advance they cannot. Is there a way for the auto advance to pause if they are typing, or for the text entry box to stay there?

Currently, there isn't an option available to pause the survey as you've described. One alternative you could explore is using JavaScript to achieve this functionality.
