Pre-Filtering Org Hierarchy Questions | XM Community

Hi,

we have an employee engagement survey where parts of the organization participate via an anonymous link (factory workers with no access to pc or mail). The org hierarchy question per se is very overwhelming for them as it is massive and the factories are only 4-5 units within a hierarchy of over 40 units.

We now want to simplify the selection for them. Does anybody have any ideas how to achieve this? My thought was to create a simple multiple choice question and then via the survey flow somehow connect the selected answer to a part in the org hierarchy but according to support the only way to connect something a  unit in the org hierarchy is the org hierarchy question itself. However, the question can also not be made “smaller” or pre-filtered.

I’d appreciate any input and brainpower here :) Thanks!

Hello, ManuF

Due to platform constraints, the Org Hierarchy question cannot be natively made smaller or pre-filtered for anonymous users. This question is required to connect responses to the hierarchy for filtering and dashboard purposes.

To simplify the selection experience while maintaining hierarchy linkage, consider these two approaches:

  1. Simplified Question with Mapping (Backend Process):

    • Replace the Org Hierarchy question with a simple Multiple Choice question showing only the key factory units.

    • After the survey, use offline data processing (manual or automated) to map these simplified multiple-choice selections to the correct units in the full organizational hierarchy.

    • Augment the response data with the necessary hierarchy metadata fields.

  2. Leverage Search Functionality:

    • Use the standard Org Hierarchy question but encourage participants to use the search box to quickly find their unit by searching the UnitDescription or other relevant metadata. This is less overwhelming than browsing the full hierarchy.

Since there is no out-of-the-box solution, achieving your goal requires either a simplified question combined with post-survey data mapping or leveraging the built-in search capabilities of the standard Org Hierarchy question.
