Randomizing 39 Questions into 3 Blocks (Matrix Question) | XM Community
Skip to main content

I have a list of 39 questions with the same question format, asking participants "to what extent do you agree with each statement". Each participant should answer ALL 39 questions once. However, it will be too long if I administer them in one matrix question. Is there a way for me to automatically break it into 3 blocks - 1 Matrix Question with randomized question statements from the 39 item pool?

I have explored the block randomization reccommendation as stricctly there is only 1 matrix question in each block with randomized 13 statements. Therefore, it does not work.

I’d appreciate any help from the community. Thanks!

Have you considered keeping them all in 1 block and repeating the headers, that way it visually breaks it up. You can also use the “highlight” feature to help keep the next row in vision easier

Hi kgillis,

Thanks for your comments! I’ve actually considered this before, but it does not randomize the statements shown in each matrix question (Always 1-13 for Matrix A; 14-26 for Matrix B). I would like to have randomly assigned statements in one matrix (1st, 3rd, 20th for Matrix A). I hope it clarifies!

@hihiall you can use advanced randomization settings for this! https://www.qualtrics.com/support/survey-platform/survey-module/block-options/question-randomization/#AdvancedRandomization

Hi Kgillis,

Thanks for your recommendation! I’ve set up advanced randomization in Matrix A (with 39 total items - randomly presenting 13 in each matrix question). As a follow-up question, for the upcoming blocks presenting the remaining items (Matrix B & C needed to accommodate all 39 items), is it possible to automatically exclude the presented randomized items in Block A?

Thanks!

I wouldn’t add them as a new survey block, but rather a new matrix question, this way you can use the loop & merge feature so that you don’t repeat question statements. You can add in page breaks between the questions if you want them to display to the respondent as though they are new blocks.
