Seeing how people spend an imaginary budget

Hello - I want to set up a question in which I give people an imaginary budget (let’s say £100 for simplicity). I want to have a variety of options at different price points and respondents can’t be allowed to spend over the £100 budget but they can spend less than their budget. Ideally, I’d like for respondents to be able to select the same option multiple times, however if that’s too complicated we can keep it so that each option can only be selected once.

So for example:

Option A = £50

Option B = £25

Option C= £10

I buy 2x A = fine

I buy 1x B, 1x C = fine

I don’t buy anything = fine (although unlikely)

I buy 10x C = fine

I buy 2x A, 1x B = overspent, shouldn’t pass

Thank you in advance!

If you are not planning to use codes, perhaps you can consider either below

  1. change your question slightly for them to allocate/input the budget to spent for option and use the constant sum question with range requirement of 100 as budget to suit your need. However, for this method, there might be cases where they might just indicate something else like allocating 90 for option A.
  2. (Tedious) use the matrix table question with validation for all possible combinations available within budget of 100. This method requires you to preset all possible combinations allowed for them to continue to the next question.
