we are using a matrix table but have the statement is already above the scale as part of the question. Hence we have no statement in front of the scale and would like to center the scale. Is there any way to do this, e.g. via custom code?

Since you are already showing statement in question text, better you make it a single select question with 5 options which are your scale and display them horizontaly.
