FAQ for Loop & Merge

ย

What is Loop & Merge?

Loop & Merge is a survey feature that allows you to take a block of questions and dynamically repeat them multiple times for a respondent based on their previous answers.

What are some common use cases for Loop & Merge?

Common examples include:

  • A school asking multiple similar questions to parents about each of their children
  • A clothing company asking similar questions regarding different types of clothing
  • Any scenario where you need to repeat the same set of questions for multiple items, people, or categories

Important: How does Loop & Merge work with blocks?

Loop & Merge is turned on and off for an entire block, so you'll want to be sure that all of the questions you want to loop through are in one block.

ย

Loop Based on a Question (Multiple Choice)

ย

What type of question do I need to loop based on respondent answers?

The question you're looping off must be a multiple choice question that allows multiple answers.

How do I set up Loop & Merge based on a multiple choice question?

  1. Create a multiple choice question (select all that apply) asking respondents to select items (e.g., "Which of the following sports do you watch?").
  2. Create a second block with questions that reference the selected items using piped text.
  3. Click on the second block and select Loop & Merge.
  4. Turn on Loop & Merge and click "Loop based off a question."
  5. Select your multiple choice question.
  6. Choose the "Selected Choices" option.
  7. The fields for the first column will be prepopulated.
  8. (Optional) You can randomize the loop order.
  9. Click Save.

How do I reference the looped items in my questions?

Add piped text in each question in the second block to reference the specific field from Loop & Merge (e.g., the specific sport they selected).

What happens when a respondent takes the survey?

The block of questions will repeat exactly as many times as the number of answers they selected in the first question.

ย

Loop Based on a Number (Text Entry)

ย

How do I loop a specific number of times based on respondent input?

  1. Create a text entry question asking for a number.
  2. Add answer validation to ensure the answer is greater than or equal to 1.
  3. Click on the following block and turn on Loop & Merge.
  4. Enable "Loop based on a question."
  5. Select the text entry question.
  6. Select the answer choice.
  7. Set a max number of loops (e.g., 10).
  8. Fill in all of the numbers in Field 1 (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...).
  9. (Optional) Add ordinal indicators in Field 2 (e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th...).
  10. Click Save.

How do I use the number fields in my questions?

Add the two piped text fields in your questions:

  • Field 1 (the number: 1, 2, 3...)
  • Field 2 (the ordinal indicator: 1st, 2nd, 3rd...)

How do I test that Loop & Merge is working correctly?

Preview your survey to ensure that:

  • The questions loop the correct number of times based on selected answers
  • Piped text displays correctly in each loop
  • Ordinal indicators (if used) appear as expected
