Custom Horizontal Scale Labeling

I need to set up a slider type question to look roughly like this:
I've spent a few hours trying to do this a myriad of different ways, but with no good solution that would work well on both desktop and mobile. The latest attempt was to create a carefully measured custom image for each label, but for some reason it automatically shrinks the two on the ends (Terrible and Excellent) so they're barely readable anymore:
If I substitute those two endpoint labels as text only, the labels are no longer centered on the scale points. The sizing varies wildly between the desktop and mobile versions (if in portrait mode), but that could be avoided by instructing users to switch to landscape:

Am I missing anything that others would do to try to replicate the original scale in the first image?
