we would like to improve quality/detail of the open text questions, we've seen other survey firms employ prompts/questions in the moment. For example, if a respondent says, “The staff was great”, the follow up question would appear in over the text box, asking something like, “Can you tell us more about what made the staff great?”. It'd be good to know if Qualtrics has any of these capabilities.

Hi there, you can use Advanced Text IQ to detect Sentiment/Topics and then create a branch in the Survey Flow that asks follow up questions based on detecting specific Sentiments/Topics. The below page goes into more detail on how that could be set up:
