Does assigning drop-down choices to groups affect collected data?

Hi,
In my survey I have a question with drop-down answers. I often need to add new answers to the end of the list. The list is now very long, and lots of answers are no longer relevant, but I still need to keep the data associated with these answers.
If I assign the drop down choices to groups now, will this affect the data I have already collected? My intuition is NO, but I can't seem to find any information that confirms this.

Hi wouldnt it be easier, to set a display logic to the answers you don't need?
you could either set this in respect to the date or simple on false

Hi Rudi,

This is a great idea! Thank you. I'm still curious to hear if anyone knows the answer to whether the data is affected when assigned to groups, but I might end up using your suggestion anyway.
