Hi, I had a question about how certain survey items with conditional display logic or skip logic that are not presented to the respondent coded in the dataset?

 

For example for a questionnaire: 

Question 1 - Do you know what year you graduated school? Yes/No

→ if Yes, display Question 2

→ if No, skip to Question 3

Question 2 - Please select year from the dropdown. 

Question 3 - ...

 

For Question 2 what values appear for respondents who responded “No” to the first Question 1 and are not shown Question 2 in the data set? Is ‘not applicable’ captured for respondents who never got the question?

In Qualtrics, if a respondent isn't shown a question due to display or skip logic, the corresponding value in the dataset will be blank. For instance, if a respondent answered "No" to Question 1 and didn't see Question 2, their response for Question 2 in the dataset will be blank. Similarly, if respondents choose a "Not Applicable" option, their response will also appear as blank because it's treated as if the question was skipped.

In cases where respondents answered "No" to Question 1 and were consequently not presented with Question 2, the response for Question 2 would typically be classified as missing or marked with a designated code indicating its inapplicability. 

Survey platforms like Qualtrics may represent this by either leaving the response blank or using a specific code such as "N/A" or "-99," depending on how the software handles missing data.

Thus, in the dataset, the value for Question 2 for respondents who skipped it due to skip logic would accurately reflect this scenario, ensuring the reliability of data analysis.
