Inline question outside of Qualtrics | XM Community
Skip to main content

Hello and good afternoon from a sunny Sweden!
I want to use an inline question leading to a Qualtrics survey, but from an email that is not distributed via Qualtrics. How do I accomplish that?
I have tried to code the questions with the link to the survey instead of the "${q://QID22/ChoiceDescription/0}" etc but I can't get it to work.

Thanks in advance
-Mattias

Hi Mattias,
The inline question code that you are using is an internal Qualtrics platform code. It will only work inside Qualtrics. What you could do instead is create a graphic in your external email platform that looks like a question, but is really a link so when the recipient clicks on the graphic it opens the survey link. I do not know of a way to embed a legit "in-line" question that would record their answer in an email outside of Qualtrics otherwise.

P.S. Going to X4? If so, let me know. I am a Utah native and can surely give you some pointers about the area.

Hi there, while the piping for in-line email question will only work when coming from Qualtrics, you should be able to obtain the HTML table it produces for use in other emails by sending an invitation to yourself and grabbing the HTML. Some other threads that might be helpful to you:
JenCX creates an in-line question for use in MarketTo that has respondent tracking.
bstrahin discusses Query Strings and appending Q_PopulateResponse to the answer options
To try it out:

  • Within Qualtrics, head to the survey you would like to distribute and head to the Email section of the distributions.

  • Include an in-line email question in the invitation, set the link type to Anonymous, and send the invitation to yourself.

  • In the inbox where you received the invitation that includes the in-line email question, open the email.

  • If using outlook, you can grab the HTML for this table by going to the Message tab, then the Move section, then the 'Actions' drop down, then 'Other Actions', then 'View Source'.

  • Wrapped in a will be the in-line email question and should contain lines about "Q_PopulateResponse"
  • Grab this code and insert into other email system

  • I'll be at X4, hope to see you there!

I ended up with the same results as what bstrahin came up with. Just wish I had read that article before spending time on it, haha.
But yeah, applying separate URLs for the choices is a good workaround for the time being.

Sadly not going to X4, but would have LOVED some pointers. I'll see if I can go next year instead. Thanks for the offer!

    Thanks for sharing!

Have a great time and I'm looking forward to all the pictures I hope will flood the community during the event!
    All the best
