Can you add a new attribute to your whole directory?

Hi everyone. I'm very new to using Qualtrics and my question is in the title. Can you add a new attribute to your whole directory at once or can you only do it manually per user?

Embedded data fields are universal, but you have to assign the values on a per contact basis.
To update all your contacts at once, export your directory to get all the contact ids, then add a column for the new embedded data field with the values populated, then re-import the contact list. It will update all the contacts with the new embedded data field.
