I accidentally added my contacts to the directory instead of a mailing list. What do I do now?

In the Directory Tab of Target Audience, you can go to Manage Triggers. From there you can indicate which list you want to add contacts to (assuming your mailing list already exists). Depending on if you want to keep them in the directory or not, you would check the "and unsubscribe from this list" option that's also available in the Manage Triggers screen.
