You've probably heard the phrase "dog days of summer" — it refers to the hottest, most sluggish stretch of the season. The name actually comes from ancient astronomy: it marks the period when Sirius, the "Dog Star," rises alongside the sun, which early Romans associated with the year's peak heat. Fittingly, International Dog Day also lands this month (August 26)!

So whether you're melting in the heat, powering through a slow August at work, or just soaking up the last of summer, we want to hear how you're spending your dog days.

Task: Share one (or more!) of the following:

  • 🐶 A photo of your pet living their best summer life
  • 🧊 Your go-to trick for beating the heat or staying productive when everyone else has slowed down
  • 🌅 A "dog days" moment — a lazy weekend, a summer routine, or how you're winding down before fall

Comment on a few other posts to keep the conversation going!

During the first week of each month, we post a new question, topic, or activity for you to connect with the community and earn a badge. All community members who join us and contribute a thoughtful comment between August 1 and August 31 will receive this badge worth 50 points by the end of the month.

Your go-to trick for beating the heat or staying productive when everyone else has slowed down

Multiple portable fans (for my fans to “pass the baton” to another when it runs out of battery) and cold drinks filled with ice during the day.

If time allows, drop some ice in the bathtub before submerging my whole body in it.

View from my remote work office today.  I have a Zoom call at 10 and hopefully Leo doesn’t bomb the meeting.  He often likes to sit on the back of my office chair as a fuzzy neck rest  Happy August!

I do not have a pet. Also, summer has ended here, but the lazy days seem to be there all year round. 😅

One thing I have noticed is that a good morning workout keeps me motivated for the rest of the day. And on days when I am feeling too lazy, I just go for a walk in a nearby park. Being around trees and greenery always helps me feel refreshed.

I have been enjoying many a good book and my happy place on my porch reading! I also am an avid gardener so watching and waiting for harvest time is a lot of fun.

Every weekend, my husband and I make sure we do a mini vacation at home...whether that is a farm drive, checking out local vendors, attending a movie and so much more - we stay active. The balance is so important and fun.

Vacation is coming soon for us...so while seeing others on vacation at work, they will feel the same when others are gone.

Missing our beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, Buddy who passed last July at an amazing 11 years of age.  Have a great rest of the summer, all!

I don’t have a pet currently but would like to have one in the future. For the time being my go to trick for beating the heat would be lots of cold coffee and/or lemonade. it keeps me going….

Digging holes that fills themselves back endlessly is one of the favorite beach activities of our dog.

I’m going to share a trick I learned from a old timer that I used to bale hay for back in the day:

When you’re super hot, pour cold water on your wrists.

I know it sounds silly, but it works and has saved my buns when working outside chopping or stacking firewood. Try it out next time you’re in the sun! 🌞

We got an inflatable movie screen and the kids are loving winding summer down with an evening movie outside, laying on the trampoline.  It didn’t get dark soon enough for us to enjoy it most of the summer, so it’s a special pre-back-to-school treat together.

In my team, we share photos of our pets every Wednesday 😁

I don’t have a pet but I look after over a dozen different pets all over New Zealand. This is Milo, enjoying his best life at Victoria Park Dog Park in Christchurch.

I don’t have a dog and summer is technically over here, but honestly, where I live, it always feels like summer. Anything below 32–33°C feels like a good day for us. My summer survival routine is simple, stay home, work, enjoy the AC with a cool drink in hand and never miss my tea.

For me, the dog days of summer are mostly about surviving the heat and enjoying the slower days.

Beating the heat means cold coffee, lots of water, AC, and whenever I get the chance, going for a swim. Swimming is probably my favorite way to escape the summer heat.

Lazy weekends, sleeping in, watching something random, or going for a swim and then taking it easy in the evening.

Basically, making the most of summer while keeping things simple, relaxed, and unhurried.

@NewHomeCXManager Thanks😊Believe it or not he was a free kitten from a farm.  I can’t imagine him living that life..  We joke around that he won the kitty lottery.
