Question: What are your favorite, local holiday traditions?
Here in our global community, we celebrate countless holiday traditions. In the spirit of the holiday season here in the states, we want to hear all about your favorite holiday traditions local to you. Are there any traditions you look forward to each year? What makes them so special to you? Alternatively, tell us about traditions you don't celebrate but admire!

My favorite tradition is the Novenas. During the nine days before Christmas we gather as a family to pray for the child God who is about to be born, each day a piece of the story is told and we gather as a family, sing Christmas carols and eat a lot of Colombian food.

Hope all is well in Perth! 🇦🇺

At work place: Mostly every year, we sing Christmas carols, play secret santa and have team dinner.
At home: Movie night, dinner night, Family night with card playing :)
Happy holidays and merry christmas everyone!

We are fortunate to have family that live in the same city as we do, so we do a progressive dinner. We start at one house for appetizers, then later move on for dinner, and conclude at the last house for dessert. It gives us all a chance to share our festive homes and enjoy our time together.

Question: What are your favorite, local holiday traditions?
Growing up we used to go out a couple times during Christmas week to see how the neighborhoods around our town would decorate their homes. Now that I have a family of my own we plan to start doing this going forward!

My favourite tradition has to be the Catalan version of a Christmas stocking (although as expats living in Spain my family never took part in such tradition).
So, in Catalonia, they have this thing called "Uncle Crap" or "the Pooping Log", which is exactly that, as you can see below, it's a log with a face and a cap covered with a blanket that 'arrives' to people's homes at the start of advent. During the run up to Christmas eve, kids feed it orange peels and cookies when they go to bed.
tio.jpgOn December 24th, the adults hide presents under the blanket and kids then hit the log with a wooden stick and sing a special song encouraging it to poo, as he's gotten so big from all those cookies he's been eating... when the song is over, they lift the blanket, and all the presents are there.
Vigo Mortensen does a really good job at explaining this to James Corden here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO1cuk43HPU

The Secret Santa we celebrate in the office. Also, usually we travel to some place in winter as everyone in family can take a break, so have some great memories around this time of the year.

My favourite holiday tradition with my family is baking TONS of gingerbread, sugar and chocolate crinkle cookies and having blast decorating them together. We're a regular bunch of Picassos!

Holidays were good

Watching Elf on Christmas Eve, there is not a better movie for getting everyone in the right frame of mind for Christmas morning!
