FAQ: Adaptive Follow-up Feature

What is the Adaptive Follow-up feature?

The Adaptive Follow-up feature is an AI-powered tool designed to enhance your survey responses by intelligently identifying key points in open-ended text answers and automatically generating personalized follow-up questions.

Who can access the Adaptive Follow-up feature?

This feature is currently available only to users on Qualtrics' new AI-powered product suites.

How does the Adaptive Follow-up work?

When respondents provide open-ended text responses, the Adaptive Follow-up analyzes their comments to identify significant themes or issues. It then generates specific follow-up questions that help clarify these points and gather more detailed information necessary for actionable insights.

How do I enable Adaptive Follow-up in my surveys?

To turn on Adaptive Follow-up:

  1. Select the question you want to enhance.
  2. Toggle on the “Include follow-up question” option under “Conversational feedback.”
  3. Customize the follow-up questions if desired by clicking “Configure.” You can choose to include or exclude your company name, set a maximum number of follow-ups, and list any topics to avoid.
  4. Click “Confirm” once you’re ready.

Can I customize the follow-up questions?

Yes! You can customize the follow-up questions by configuring options such as including/excluding your company name, setting the maximum number of follow-ups, and avoiding specific topics.

What are the benefits of using Adaptive Follow-up?

Utilizing the Adaptive Follow-up feature allows you to:

  • Gather deeper insights from respondents' open-ended answers.
  • Streamline the survey process without needing further direct contact with respondents.
  • Enhance your understanding of customer frustrations and needs, leading to better problem resolution.

When I click on configure follow up question, “Program details” shows up in the pop up, however “Question Settings” doesn’t show up. Is there a setting or permission that needs to be enabled to be able to fully use this feature?

Hi @murvig,

We’re happy you’re interested in trying out this new feature! For in-depth info on how to enable this feature visit our AI Administration support page

Would be great if we could customize the upper limit of comment word count to trigger a follow up question. In my test run, a follow up question still appears in most answers where the respondent already puts in a little essay, and that could be really annoying and impacting the response rate

My survey base language is English and it is tranlated to other languages. The followup question works only in the English version though in the support page it says it is working in: French, Japanese etc. https://www.qualtrics.com/support/survey-platform/survey-module/editing-questions/question-types-guide/standard-content/text-entry/#ConversationalFeedback

Can you please explain what is needed to make it work in these languages as well?

Hi @Keren Shaked,

I raised your question to the product team and this is what they replied:

To resolve this issue, please ensure you have "advanced" permissions enabled rather than just "basic" permissions. You can find detailed information about the differences between these permission levels on our AI Admin support page.
