Use auto punch to combine 3 questions into 1

I am asking a long list of items carried. Because it's so long, I asked it over 3 separate questions. For reporting, I really need to merge those 3 questions back into one. I have tried embedded data thinking I could use a series of Multi-value text set but each one just overwrites the last. I was hoping it would just append each value instead of replacing the last value.
I am sure this can be done with a hidden question and some way to autopunch but I am not sure how to do it. Any ideas?
