Using Contact List and Embedded Data to Have Certain Participants View a Block

Forum|alt.badge.img+1

Hi Everyone,

I'm having an issue with survey logic using a contact list and embedded data. Here's my setup:
I have a survey where:

  • Target population should see all question blocks including the last block
  • General population should see all blocks except the last block
  • Population type is determined by embedded data (TargetPopulationID) from a contact list
  • TargetPopulationID values: 1 = target population, 0 = general population

The issue: When testing the survey as a member of the target population, I'm not seeing the last block of questions when I should be.
Some relevant details:

  • I uploaded the contact list via CSV with TargetPopulationID as a column
  • The TargetPopulationID column doesn't display in the list view in Qualtrics, but the embedded data is visible when clicking individual entries
  • I've tried setting the embedded data field as both text (with Yes or No options) and number types (0 and 1), but neither worked
  • My actual contact list will have around 5,000 participants, so I need a solution using the contact list rather than survey questions for branching
  • The attached screenshot shows my current survey flow setup and the contact list setup

Has anyone encountered this before or can suggest what might be wrong with my setup? Any advice would be much appreciated!

For data to be pulled from the contact list, you should not assing a value to that ED in your survey flow.

Change your ED to :

@D.Mew  When you test the survey as a member of the target population, is the TargetPopulationID of 1 showing up correctly as embedded data in the survey response? If it is showing up correctly, I wonder if the order of your blocks in the survey is causing an issue. Is the block with questions that is only for TargetPopulationID = 1 at the end of the survey? If it’s before the other blocks, that might be causing the issue, but I’m unsure without testing.

@CRQualtrics When looking at the Data & Analysis tab, the TargetPopulationID does not show any values. The block for TargetPopulationID = 1 is at the end of the survey.

Hmm...how are you testing the survey? Is it via preview link, anonymous/generic link, or are you distributing it to yourself via Qualtrics email?

@CRQualtrics I’ve been distributing it to the entire dummy contact list I made for testing which has my email as well as some other people who could help see if the tests are working or not. Me and one other person are listed as target population and two others are listed as general population. I’ve tried using the preview link, but I do not know how to use it in a way where it shows me the branching logic/how to test it there.

@ahmedA  Thanks for catching that. I’ve made that change, but I am still not seeing the block of questions nor am I seeing any value set in the Data & Analysis tab under TargetPopulationID…

@D.Mew I recommend making sure the change with the embedded data field is applied in the survey flow and the survey is republished. It’s also ideal to submit any previous test surveys so that your new test survey starts fresh. If you are stuck in an old survey session, it might not work.

@CRQualtrics Wow I knew it would have a simple solution. I didn’t know I needed to republish the survey to make the changes occur. Thank you for stating that, the survey now works! Thank you and @ahmedA!
