How run Text iQ topic triggered workflows with multiple languages?

It is mentioned in Qualtrics documentation that topic detection supports English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, and Dutch. I understand that some languages are supported for sentiment analysis which Text iQ outputs based on machine learning. But for topic detection, this is a rules based system that requires identifying the specific words/phrases that should trigger a topic to be tagged.

We are looking to have a workflow that is triggered when a verbatim mentions certain words. Because this survey is deployed in several languages, we want the workflow to trigger if the word is mentioned in any of those languages. I am aware of the Translate Comments feature, but that is not available to use for workflows.

Is it expected that we manually configure our topic tagging rules to include English and non-English words? Or is there some hidden feature that automatically does this (based on the highlighted documentation below)?

Hello, Jake!

For topic detection in Qualtrics' Text iQ, the system currently operates on a rules-based approach. This requires you to manually configure specific words and phrases that will trigger a topic tag.

The documentation confirms that there is no automatic feature that translates or maps non-English words to English keywords to trigger topics across languages automatically.

  • Required Action: For surveys deployed in multiple languages, you must manually configure your topic tagging rules to include keywords from English AND all other languages used in the survey.

  • Translated Comments Feature: While Qualtrics offers a "Translate Comments" feature to create translated text fields for analysis, this transformation cannot be used directly in workflows because the translated fields are not available when the workflow is triggered.

  • The Bottom Line: There is no hidden or automatic multilingual topic detection feature based on translations currently supported in workflows. Manual multilingual configuration of topic tagging rules is necessary to ensure topic triggers happen based on mentions in any language.

Some development is currently underway to support AI-powered topics. This feature is planned to be capable of analyzing data in multiple languages using a single model. However, this is intended for future releases and currently only supports English.

Until these future features are available, the standard approach is to manually define topic rules with keywords from all relevant languages.

If you need specific guidance on the manual configuration of multilingual topics within your current survey structure, or have detailed questions about when the AI-powered topics feature might become available, you should submit a ticket.

Hi Luis, thank you for confirming my understanding! We are very much looking forward to AI-powered topics. Could you also clarify what this means in the documentation (highlighted in blue)? I assume Text iQ could detect topics in any language as long as the keywords are entered in the language that the text is entered in. What does it mean that those 8 languages specifically are supported?
