Connecting to Clerk Chat/Microsoft Teams SMS

My research team is working on a research study together with a nonprofit organization that uses a Clerk Chat/Microsoft Teams integration to provision phone numbers for SMS messaging across their organization. 

This nonprofit has kindly offered to provide our study with a dedicated number that the research team can use for text messaging.

  • An advantage of using this number is that it would be pre-approved for our use case + we could use it to send unlimited SMS messages - with no additional cost to the study or to the nonprofit organization. 
     
  • A disadvantage is that neither Clerk Chat nor Microsoft Teams are on the list of SMS providers that Qualtrics offers plugins for

Ideally, we would like to be able to use this number with Qualtrics’ Workflow, in order to send text messages with survey notifications and reminders to our study participants.

Can anyone suggest ideas or workarounds for accomplishing this?

Hello,

Qualtrics does not currently offer native or direct integration support for using Clerk Chat or Microsoft Teams as SMS providers within its workflows. These platforms are not on the list of officially supported SMS providers for Qualtrics plugins, meaning direct SMS messaging via them inside Qualtrics workflows is not directly possible.

 

While direct integration is not available, here are potential workarounds to consider:

  • Custom API Integration: If Clerk Chat or your nonprofit's SMS provisioning system offers an API, you could use Qualtrics workflows to trigger webhooks or API calls (via REST API tasks). This requires technical development to authenticate and send messages through their API.

  • Use an Intermediary Service (Middleware): Implement a separate middleware platform that listens for events from Qualtrics (workflow events or survey responses). This external service would then use its own existing integration with Clerk Chat or Microsoft Teams to send the SMS messages. This allows you to use your approved number and unlimited SMS while decoupling the sending from native Qualtrics workflows.

  • SMS Distribution via XM Directory Reminders: You can technically set up SMS notifications through supported SMS providers linked to survey responses. However, since Clerk Chat/Teams is not supported, this method would require the custom external handling mentioned above.

  • Explore Qualtrics Conversational APIs: For complex scenarios, building a conversational interface using Qualtrics APIs might allow embedding/sending messages via external platforms, though this is advanced and may not directly support external SMS sending via Clerk Chat or Teams.

 

Native SMS sending in Qualtrics workflows currently requires using their supported SMS providers (such as Twilio). Utilizing a dedicated number from your nonprofit via Clerk Chat/Teams is only feasible through custom external integration, not natively within Qualtrics workflows.
