Q: Tell us about your current role.
A: I serve as the Senior Director of Research, Evaluation, and Innovation at Starr Commonwealth, a nonprofit located in Albion, Michigan. I lead a team of Evaluators, Analysts, and Researchers in the field of trauma responsiveness and resilience science. Our team helps clients such as K-12 schools, monitor and measure the impact of implementing Starr's Resilient Schools Project, an evidence-informed approach to establishing a sustainable strength-based system that provides a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment for all students; offers guidance and support to staff; and approaches all aspects of education through a trauma-informed, resilience-focused, and DEI-responsive lens.
Q: Tell us about one project that you have run on Qualtrics that has been particularly impactful.
A: A project that has been particularly impactful is capturing data across schools for our Resilient Schools Project. As part of our project to help schools implement trauma-responsive, strength-based practices in their schools, we needed a way to collect survey data across schools, identify any patterns in the schools' implementation efforts, and report on outcomes. Through Qualtrics, we were able to build our Trauma-Informed Schools Questionnaire as an embedded survey and create customized survey links per school (https://starr.org/?s=TISQ). We were also able to develop a reporting template in Qualtrics that generates reports on survey results. Moreover, because all of the data is housed in an embedded survey, we are able to look at the data across school contexts and dissect it in multiple ways. From these analyses, we are noticing a pattern and dynamic emerging across the schools implementing Starr's Resilient Schools Project: improved student behavior, increased academic engagement, and improved teacher morale, which are all leading to overall improved school climate. Qualtrics has proven to be an essential tool for us to capture this data story and as a result, we recently published the findings in our Resilient Schools Project whitepaper: https://starr.org/resilient-schools-project-whitepaper/.
Q: What would you like to learn from others in the Community?
A: I am eager to see how others are using Qualtrics to find creative solutions for capturing and reporting on various school data. I'm also interested in seeing how others are building and using reporting templates in Qualtrics.
Q: If time and money were endless, what would be your dream experience?
A: My dream experience would be to build a community park in my city that features nature paths, a flower garden, a butterfly vivarium, and outdoor reflection spaces for all residents and visitors to enjoy.
Q: Do you have any additional or fun information you'd like to share as it relates to your experience with Qualtrics?
A: I watched this past Qualtrics XM-Innovation webinar and was energized by the latest features and offerings especially related to ways of capturing employee experience(s) in an organization - an integral part of DEI practice. There is so much I am eager to dig into and explore! I appreciated too Adam Grant's helpful guidance on organizational culture transformation and Venus Williams' reminder to be ready to pivot and lean into new directions!
