Workaround for Regular Email Blacklist Uploads?

Hi everyone,

I have a client who wants to “blacklist” certain email addresses and plans to send us a CSV of these emails on a regular basis. As far as I know, Qualtrics doesn’t offer an actual blacklisting feature.

This sounds opting these contacts in advance out of the Directory, but I’m not sure what the best approach is.

Has anyone implemented a workaround for this?

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello @gPandey_715,

Why don’t you try adding a new column to the CSV file? Create a field called ‘Unsubscribed’ and for the contacts you don’t want to send the survey to, set the value in that field to 1

Let me know if this works.

Hi @Sachin Nandikol ,

This actually helped a lot. After adding the unsubscribed column in the file and importing it, the Qualtrics system automatically opted out the contacts that had the value 1. I think I just discovered a hidden yet very useful feature — it really saves a lot of manual effort!

Just out of curiosity, did you know that adding the unsubscribed column would automatically opt out those contacts in the Qualtrics system?

Thanks!

Hi @Sachin Nandikol ,

I also noticed one more thing during the file import — the opt-out status change applies only to the imported mailing list. It is not a global directory-level opt-out and only affects the specific file being imported.

@gPandey_715 , Adding an Unsubscribed column will only opt the contact out within the specific directory you uploaded the list to. If your instance uses multiple directories, you will need to repeat the process for each one. Opting a contact out in a single directory does not unsubscribe them across the entire Qualtrics ecosystem.

Yes, if you import a contact into a mailing list, they will be opted out only from that specific mailing list. If you want to ensure the contact does not receive any surveys from the entire directory, you will need to opt them out at the Directory Contact level.

I recommend importing the contact directly into XMD, which ensures they won’t receive any surveys from the directory at all. Or import into one of the mailing list and opt them out from the directory.
