Preventing html names when exporting translation files | XM Community

When exporting a translation file and my survey has html code, the exported file seems to have some issues with the character set:

  1. Certain character (like German ä, ö, ü) are only displayed through their html names, e.g. “ü”, instead of theire true unicode characters.
  2. The downloaded file contains weird downward arrows that (IMO) should not be there in the first place.

Can someone please explain to me what’s going on there and how I can create a translation file with a true utf-8 character set?

  1. Unicode characters get converted to html entities if you manually edit the translations in Qualtrics. I believe it is the built-in editor than converts them when a question translation is saved. If you just upload a translation and never edit it, I don’t think the characters are converted.
  2. The arrows represent line feed characters. They aren’t needed. I always use a global find/replace to remove them before sending a file for translation.

Thanks @TomG I can’t remember having done any manual edit to the translations. In fact, in this project, I just added English as my second language and downloaded the translation file after it.

Do you have any idea how to get rid of them or not to have them there in the first place? (besides the obvious solution of doing a search & replace for all html names)

As to your second point. OK, good to know we can get rid of them. Question of course is why they are there in the first place even though they are needed.
