Yes, you can use web service and can use get method to pull the unique ID of Xm directory and the you can use put method to upload the information respective to unique ID.

You will get the XMD contact search API and XMD contact import API from documentation. 

Apart from the above options, if you are looking to push embedded data into the XM Directory from the survey, you can use the Workflows tab to create a workflow with XM Directory task that updates the directory with the additional embedded data against that specific contact.
