Tracking a change to embedded data

Is there a method for tracking changes to a single embedded data field using the experience id change event or really any other solution to track only when that single embedded data field changes? We need to track college major changes for a group and them being added to a segment or list would be a tremendous time saver, but we do not want to track every single change to a profile.
If we used the experience ID change as the recommended way then every single one of our students we are tracking would be written to the track changes segment weekly for one reason or another.
