Topic: Attention Check Alternatives

Attention checks are a common trend seen across research projects where researchers attempt to catch “bad” respondents, or respondents who aren’t paying attention, by asking them to answer a question with a specific response. If the question is not answered correctly, the entire survey response is eliminated from the data set.

These types of attention checks lead to respondents losing trust and becoming more conservative with their answers. By eliminating all people who fail attention checks, you might be eliminating a subset of your population who are less likely to take a survey.

A better alternative to random attention checks throughout the survey is asking respondents if they will commit to providing high-quality responses at the beginning of the survey. This initial question functions as an honor code and tends to make respondents who agree feel like they have a greater stake in the survey.
