Topic: Generating a Sample Size

While “the bigger the sample, the better” is a popular research sentiment, there are other considerations when selecting the appropriate sample size for your project.

Sample size is the number of responses needed to make accurate estimations of your desired population as a whole. A correct sample size is crucial to your data’s validity, since too small of a sample can lead to getting an inaccurate representation of your population, and too large of a sample can be overly expensive and time-consuming.

You can use Qualtrics’ Sample Size Calculator to calculate your ideal sample size by providing your confidence level, population size, and margin of error. After calculation, your analytics plan and response rate need to be considered so the sample size and number of recorded responses match.

Next time you find yourself at the beginning of a research project, see to it that all of the elements above are taken into account!

Questions of the Week: What is your process to create a target sample size?

We use our own panel for the bulk of our surveys that are our own creation and for this reason we generally shoot for 1k - 1.2k responses which gives us flexibility for dissecting the data by profile designs we created.  For any template surveys we use the suggested response count is taken into consideration.

That’s an efficient way of doing things and a relatively large amount of responses. It definitely seems like your team does a great job in making sure you get an accurate representation of your wanted demographic. 😎
