I'd like to send a monthly survey. Sometimes there will be repeat contacts taking the survey. I'd like to have all the monthly responses together with a distinguishing variable (month) enabling comparisons month-to-month. What is the best practice for this? One survey, sent monthly enabling repeat taking of survey? Monthly surveys that get compiled later?

Someone else may have a better answer, but my personal preference is to do it all on one survey. You can create a variable after the fact for month and base it off of "Survey Start Date". Alternatively, you could create an Embedded Data field named Month and then just type the month into that field each time before you send out the survey.
Bruce, I would recommend doing this in one survey. I would also follow @uhrxx005 suggestion to create an Embedded data field for month and update it as appropriate. You could try to do this automatically if you can follow and adapt this post (https://www.qualtrics.com/community/discussion/1607/inserting-month-as-piped-text).
If you are going to use the Qualtrics email distribution you may have trouble with it flagging those same contacts month over month as duplicates. The email support page defines duplicate emails as "emails with the exact same message and recipient as another email that went out." By piping a timestamp or date into the body of your email, you should be able to prevent emails being flagged as duplicates.
