I am making a matrix table and I would like to have the first answer choices to be a drop down box. For the remainder of that matrix table, I would like to have text entry. Does anyone have a solution to this? I don't have any expereince with Java.

Isn't it confusing for respondents? Do you consider separating in two questions?

You should consider using a side-by-side question instead. The first side-by-side column can be a dropdown and the second side-by-side column can be open end text with multiple answer columns.
