Hi,

when trying to include a screen grab or copy pasting a simple image into an XM Community (private) message I get the below error rendering the message unsendable 🤔 Is this a shortcoming of the Gainsight platform or is there another reason why no images can be included?

Oddly it is possible when writing this message … Looking forward to better understanding how to relay messages, communciate & collaborate in this community.

thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi @ahmedA  and @AlonsoC ,

I tried reducing the character length via Paint by saving the picture both in JPG and GIF formats. I managed to produce a JPG file of 4.16KB which according to the Base64 site had only 5684 characters, well below the 10K warning that this Gainsight platform issues. Still could not paste the simple image in a private communication chat (though again, oddly can when posting it here - see below). Enfin, perhaps need to wait for Gainshight to reply (and explain) how come some images are able to be copy pasted into exchanges (like this one - and yes you can tell by the horrible quality) while in others it can’t (like the private messages)

The contents entered into these text boxes are converted into base64. This not only enhances security but also reduces processing requirements, as browsers and servers only need to handle text. You can read more about this here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/URI/Schemes/data

The length of the base64 string depends on the size of your image. From the screenshot, it seems that the image (along with the other content in your post) results in a string longer than 10K characters. Additionally, since the text box supports rich text editing, much of the backend data is in HTML format. This means that formatting also increases the string length: for example, this takes up more space than this, and this takes up more space than this.

Once simple solution is to paste the image in paint and reduce its resolution.

Here’s a simple tool that allows you to convert your images to base64. Giving you an idea of your string length. https://www.base64encoder.io/image-to-base64-converter/

Hi @SteveBelgraver,

I reached out to Gainsight and they confirmed that currently it’s not possible to send images, videos, or upload documents through private messages. However, I've upvoted an existing feature request to enable this and shared your use case.

@SteveBelgraver I believe the issue is due to Gainsight not allowing images (and other media). Based on @AlonsoC’s comment, there’s nothing we can do but wait.

Our Community platform provider does not allow images in private messages.

This content type here in our exchange is a “Question” post type (members can create Questions, or Discussions). These content types allow for images in both the main post, and replies.

It’s simply a platform limitation. We will relay the product feedback to our platform provider! I myself would also like to have the ability to add images or attachments in direct messages.

Hope this helps!
